Romania’s Ministry of Education and Research has approved the examination structure and list of subjects for the national Baccalaureate beginning in 2030. The new format is aligned with the upper-secondary framework plans and curricula introduced in the 2026–2027 school year. [W1]

The first students affected will be those entering Grade 9 in 2026 and completing upper-secondary education in 2030. [W1]

Key changes

Assessment will be adapted to each educational pathway, profile, and specialization, combining common examinations with a structure differentiated according to each student’s course of study. [W2]

Competency assessments

  • communication skills in Romanian and, for students belonging to national minorities, in their mother tongue; [W2]
  • language skills in two modern languages, compared with one modern language under the current structure; [W2]
  • digital skills. [W2]

Written examinations

The Baccalaureate will include a written Romanian language and literature examination and, for students belonging to national minorities, a written mother-tongue language and literature examination. Candidates will also take two compulsory written examinations differentiated by educational pathway, profile, and specialization. [W2]

For the theoretical pathway, the differentiated examinations are structured as follows: [W2]

  • Mathematics and Computer Science: mathematics, followed by a subject chosen from computer science, physics, chemistry, and biology. [W2]
  • Natural Sciences: one subject chosen from physics, chemistry, and biology, together with a second subject chosen from physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science. [W2]
  • Social Sciences: history, followed by a subject chosen from geography, social sciences, and religion. [W2]
  • Philology: the language and literature of an international language, followed by a subject chosen from history, geography, social sciences, and religion. [W2]

In the technological pathway, the first differentiated examination will be specific to the student’s field of training, while the second will cover a subject relevant to the science profile. In the vocational pathway, students will take one specialist subject and one subject relevant to the specialization’s predominant profile. [W2]

The new Examination F: core competencies

A major addition is written Examination F, which complements the student’s profile. Science-profile students will choose from history, geography, social sciences, and religion, while humanities-profile students will choose from mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. For technological and vocational pathways, the selected subject will complement the choices made for the differentiated examinations. [W2]

When the examinations will take place

The assessments in two modern languages, digital skills, and Examination F are scheduled to take place during the school year. The written Romanian, mother-tongue, and two differentiated examinations will be held during the Baccalaureate examination session. [W2][W3]

The new structure is intended to provide assessment adapted to each specialization, choices connected to students’ educational pathways, and a balance between specialist knowledge and broader core competencies. [W3]
